¿Hacia dónde se dirige la democracia?

La ruptura del vínculo democracia-república en la era neoliberal

Resumen

El argumento central se basa en el contenido republicano del Estado burgués moderno, y se desarrolla en dos secciones. En la primera parte, intentaremos explicar por qué definimos la crisis actual no como una crisis de la democracia o de la democracia liberal en general, ni como una ruptura con la democracia liberal, sino como la ruptura del vínculo entre la pretensión republicana y las instituciones y procedimientos democráticos, la depuración de la democracia de su contenido republicano; en otras palabras, la «dessustanciación de la democracia». En la segunda, destacaremos cómo las dinámicas de clase y políticas que llevaron a la identificación de la idea de Estado con una institución democrática republicana, dentro del desarrollo histórico del capitalismo, se han transformado radicalmente desde la década de 1970 bajo la influencia de las políticas neoliberales dirigidas a las conquistas históricas del trabajo frente al capital, y argumentaremos que este cambio histórico mundial está detrás de la actual desustanciación de la democracia.
