Para onde vai a democracia?
a ruptura do vínculo democracia-república na era neoliberal

O argumento central se sustenta sobre o terreno do conteúdo republicano do Estado burguês moderno a partir de duas seções. Na primeira seção tentaremos explicar por que definimos a crise atual não como uma crise da democracia ou da democracia liberal em geral, ou como uma ruptura com a democracia liberal, mas sim como o rompimento do vínculo entre a pretensão de ser uma república e as instituições e procedimentos democráticos, o expurgo da democracia do seu conteúdo republicano — por outras palavras, a "dessubstanciação da democracia". Na segunda parte do artigo, chamaremos a atenção para como a dinâmica de classe e política que levou à identificação da ideia de Estado com uma instituição democrática republicana dentro do desenvolvimento histórico do capitalismo foi radicalmente transformada desde a década de 1970 sob a influência de políticas neoliberais que visam os ganhos históricos do trabalho contra o capital, e argumentaremos que essa mudança histórico-mundial está por trás da atual dessubstanciação da democracia.
